You used to be my hero

I've added a few new links to the blogroll on the right hand side this week. The latest one I have added is Wil Wheaton Dot Net. For those of you who don't know, Wil Wheaton used to play Wesley Crusher in Star Trek, The Next Generation. Since he left Star Trek TNG at the end of the fourth series his career has not exactly sparkled.
I used to be a big TNG fan and particularly liked the character of Wesley Crusher, a teenage genius who's father had died at a young age and was forced to grow up in a predominantly adult world as he was dragged from ship to ship by his career mother.
I've been aware of Wil Wheaton Dot Net for a while but have resisted reading it because it whenever I saw it mentioned on other blogs it was not in a good light. Too many times I've felt let down to discover that celebrities I thought I admired are actually nothing like I believed them to be.
So this week I actually looked up Wil Wheaton Dot Net to see what his writing was really like. And I was initially surprised and disappointed in roughly equal measure. Wil is an articulate writer who appears to write as he feels, without too many heirs and graces. However, I thought that he does also appear at times to have an over-inflated opinion on his own importance. Then I realised that, at a very young and impressionable age, he had once been world famous and very rich. To have come through that and once again returned to being a struggling actor is quite a journey. A large number of people who make that trip lose their way part way along and end up as a "drugs and drink" footnote in the obituaries.
Wil Wheaton is not the man that I imagined him to be. But that is my problem not his. It seems that he can also suffer from an inflated ego. But considering what he's been through, he is incredibly grounded. I don't know that his weblog will be an habitual read like most of the others on the roll but I will definately be reading.
