Buy me a Daily Mail

Many years ago, before I had children of my own, I remember reading about a crusade by one of our national papers (probably the Daily Mail - it's their sort of thing) to ban a line of young girl's underwear being sold by a national chain of clothes shops. The knickers they said were inappropriate for girls of 8 to 11 being, as they were, modelled on adult lingerie. High-cut, lacy and risqué at best (provocative at worst) they pandered to a young girl's desire to be "more grown-up" but sent out completely the wrong message to boys of the same age, and worse, paedophilic adults.

I remember dismissing the whole issue off-hand as overblown and melodramatic.

Last night Sharon walked into Chloe's room to find her prancing around in a pair of skimpy, high cut cotton panties with the words "Naughty Kitty" on the front. Chloe is 11 and we have never, and would never, buy her underwear like this.

I can't say too much about where they came from, thankfully it wasn't any of our friends of family. Some people though have a very twisted idea of what is appropriate for their daughters.

Chloe on the other hand, should have known better.

Funny how your perspectives change isn't it?

On this topic, I was at Home Depot to buy some gardening items - yesterday, for a matter of fact. There was a young long-legged girl there, accompanied by what looked to be her mom. This girl was probably around 8 or 9 years old and was wearing a vinyl mini skirt, go-go boots and a little tee. Her outfit was totally sexualized and inappropriate. To boot, it was sort of nippy and windy. There is no way in hell my daughter will ever get away with tooling around in an outfit like that (she's only 14 months now..lol...I have some time to before dealing with this issue). The thing is, what was her parent/guardian thinking? To me this is a no brainer.
