In my absence, why not take a look at strip mining for whimsy.
It is primarily the well-written memories of a man who went through quite a rough childhood. Brought up by a drug addicted, gay and eventually HIV positive father and with occasional visits from a schizophrenic mother.
I was hooked for hours the first time I read it.
I was mildly disappointed to discover that the weblog may not be genuine when I came across this entry. The "Sonya" that he refers to is another weblog on the same domain.
If it is fiction, it's incredibly well written fiction but I think I'd prefer to know.

The post you mention is actually a reference to a running joke on Sonya's blog.
