Beyond the pale

Maher Arar is a Canadian. He was born in Syria. His family left Syria when he was 17 and moved to Canada.

Maher was reasonably successful, setting up his own telecommunications company and consulting across Canada and the US. He has a wife and 2 children.

On 26 September 2002 during a stopover in the US as he returned home he was taken to one side by immigration officials. He was, apparently on a list. A list of terror suspects. Why? Because some very distant relative and the brother of an old acquaintance may have had contacts with terror groups.

The US authorities questioned him but because he knew nothing, he could tell them nothing. But the US authorities obviously weren't satisfied. So they deported him to Syria and delivered him straight to the authorities there.

The Syrian authorities tortured Maher Arar FOR TEN MONTHS! Ten f*cking months!

Jesus fucking christ! How can this happen? Why has this barely even registered in the World Media. Why has it not brought the Bush Government crashing down?

Forget Watergate. So someone tried to fix an election. So what? They're all at it. This man was tortured at the behest of the American Government for 10 months!

I'm staggered. It's truly beyond belief.
