When I was a kid McDonalds sold Root Beer and it quickly became my favourite soft drink. It reminded me of the sarsaparilla drink my Granny used to make me when we visited her. Unfortunately, in the early 1990s, just as I was growing into adulthood, they stopped selling it. Many were dismayed and despondent and the UK has remained pretty much a Root Beer free country since then.
Once again the Internet comes to the rescue of those of us missing that fruity, almost liquorice taste. There are now places where you can get 24 Cans of A&W Root Beer, Mug Root Beer or even Diet Root Beer imported from US, Natural Root Beer (and Free Natural Sarsaparilla) - although these products may be worth ignoring - or learn how to brew it yourself.
Wait... they don't have root beer in the UK? My god... how could you call yourself a civilized country if you don't have root beer? I... I just won't think about it.
By the way, I recommend Goose Island Root Beer-- it doesn't have that artificial/overly-sweet taste that plagues the lesser quality stuff. A and W is pretty good, too.
I always thought it tasted like medicine!
my hubby is american - we're in the uk and he pines daily for his root beer (i reckon it tastes like tcp...) - so can you put him out of his misery? where do we get it? Cool blog, BTW *grin*
All of the links in the second paragraph are to online stores selling Root Beer. Try some of those links.
I've just been on holiday to Canada and tasted Root Beer for the first time! Its such a shame that its not availiable in the UK, every 1 should petition people like McDonalds, KFC, Coca-Cola etc to start selling it in the UK
Sainsbury's sell 2 litres bottles of root beer. And Asda sell 330ml cans in 6 packs (made by Carters).
For me, the problem with the supermarket root beers (apart from the fact that they are very poor root beers) is that they aren't diet. I can't have sugar so it is a big problem for a root beer addict like myself.
The American Goodies links above do not work. Use http://www.americansoda.co.uk/ instead. It is the same site but for some reason they used the American Goodies domain for a while. So far they have the best price for American Root Beer that I have been able to find (and they sell diet!).
I have been told that iceland sell root beer as does the cyber candy shop in covent garden and their website.
Selfridges in the Bullring in Birmingham occasionally sells individual cans of A&W, not diet I'm afraid. They are costly at over £1 a can but I savour every one that I have.
Check out this cool root beer site!

The Sainsbury's root beer is sugar free, which I discovered much to my dismay after buying 4 bottles. Still drank them though. Carter's is better IMO. People, please sign this http://www.petitiononline.com/rootbeer/petition.html to show our need of root beer in the UK.
if you live in cardiff you can get virgils root beer at new york deli and in a premumim shop for £1.50 and a&w for £1.25 in howells as well other american products
Hey everyone, there has been a new site launched all to do with root beer in the UK! There is also a forum for any sightings etc and you can discuss your favourite brews.
I tried the site americansoda.co.uk. Their range of rootbeer and other American sodas and candies is great. They were really cheap and I got my stuf delivered next day!!
