Finally it seems to be sinking in to public bodies what drivers have known for a long time. Speed cameras located at sites where there have previously been no accidents (and therefore can only have been located there as a revenue raising exercise) can make that stretch of road more dangerous not less.
Several sites, including Bristol Road South in Birmingham, that had previously been accident free showed a dramatic increase in accidents after cameras were installed. Thankfully, it would appear that such cameras throughout the West Midlands are to be removed.
Yes. I am aware that properly placed speed cameras do reduce accidents and save lives. I have never argued that they don't and I'm all for anything that will make driving safer (well, almost anything). What makes my blood boil is the placing of cameras as revenue generating devices in the name of safety when clearly safety has nothing to do with it.
