Chasetown FC, the biggest of several minor league clubs in Burntwood, reached the first round of the FA Club after a 1-0 win over Blyth Spartans in last night's replay of a 2-2 draw on Saturday.
The Club, who play in the Midland Football Alliance League will now play former Premier League team Oldham Athletic who play in Division 1 of the Coca Cola Football League, a full 6 divisions higher than Chasetown.
Chasetown have had approval from the F.A. to hold the First Round match at their home ground on 6 November 2005 and it will be televised on BBC. It is expected that match attendance will shoot up from 50 to 100 per game to over 3,000. Chasetown is likely to have to hire in stands to accommodate the additional crowds but may well net £60,000 to £100,000 from the match.
I'm not a big football fan but when a local team such as this has the opportunity for some real giant killing, you can be sure I'll be rooting for them.
