The world divides into 3 types of people; those who love..........

You get where I'm going with this. Or at least, if you've seen Monty Python you do. And even if you haven't, as long as you don't hate Monty Python, you'll love the musical Spamalot

Weekend before last, Sharon and I went with some friends to see Spamalot in its London show. It was one of the best shows I have ever seen. That's not difficult seeing as how it's only the 4th show I've ever seen. However, Sharon says it's one of the best shows she's ever seen - and she used to work in the theatre so she's seen a few.

Spamalot is a musical "lovingly ripped off from" the Monty Python film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Most of the plot, characters, jokes and general humour is lifted wholesale from Holy Grail and, to be honest, is all the better for it. The extra bits thrown in from other films and the fresh funny stuff just makes it even better.

The songs are superb and most are clearly the later additions mixed into the stolen bits. The humour in many of the songs is a satire of typical (or stereotypical) musicals; note "This is the song that goes like this".

You don't need to have seen any Monty Python to enjoy the show. Indeed Sharon's only encounter with Monty Python is through the repeated, often badly remembered shouting of the clichéd lines by me and some of my childhood friends. And if anything, she found the show funnier than I did.

I will sound one note of caution. We went to see Spamalot at the Palace Theatre, London. We sat in the balcony. I wouldn't recommend to anyone that they buy seats in the balcony. Unless you're in the front row of the balcony, Row A, you can't see roughly 1/3 of the stage. And if the person in front of you is the same height as or, god forbid, taller than you they will hide about half of what remains.

This put me in a foul mood at the start of the show and it's a testament to the show that it still pulled me out of my funk within 5 minutes.

So I would heartily commend Spamalot but suggest you pay that bit extra for the nice seats.

Himself and I have been debating whether or not to go and see this one. We saw Avenue Q and that was hilarious. We managed to get a box for that show which was fabulous! We're thinking about seeing Wicked next time but maybe we'll change to Spamalot after your glowing report.

Oooh. I'd definitely say Spamalot over Wicked without a doubt.
