Webrings

I've spent most of this evening doing some house keeping on my two webrings: BlogPhiles and Blogging Blokes.

When I took over the running of BlogPhiles it had in excess of 800 members, although no serious house keeping had been done for some time. As time has gone on and I've removed the dead and abandoned blogs and those who have removed the ring code that number has reduced dramatically. Today it is down to just 354 active members, although there is a distinct possibility that some of those have been abandoned.

I wonder if that's an indication of my poor management of the ring (mainly due to the masses of f***ing spam applications and RingSurf's failure to do anything about it). Or is it an indication of a fall in the number of bloggers? Or maybe it's simply an indication that webrings are losing their attraction as a method of promoting weblogs.

I sometimes feel that it's a thankless task running a large webring. I really hate the housekeeping part. Why can't people remove their info from the admin when they decide to leave the ring/stop blogging?
