What is it about DJs that makes drunk women think they can act in a way that, if the genders were reversed, would probably result in a sexual harassment case.
Tonight I was DJing at a Motown night. It's the first Motown night I've ever done so it was hard work and I was busy all night trying to work out what to play next. So when a group of 3 women from a hen party started leaning over the front of my kit to get me to pose for a photo with a blow up (male) doll, I didn't really have the time.
However, one of the group decided I was a miserable [slurred expletive] who needed cheering up. So she came round to the back of the decks and proceeded to grope my arse, gyrate behind me with her crutch against my back and try to convince me to dance. At a time when I'm not only busy but extremely stressed about what I'm going to play, that much less thrilling than it sounds.
You know, if she was a little less drunk (and I was a little more self-deluded) I could have been flattered by the attention - she was a very good looking girl. Unfortunately she was so pissed she could barely stand and I was fully aware that she was doing it as a piss-take.
Unfortunately she refused to take no (or go away, or please leave me alone or even a simple f*ck off) for an answer. Finally, after about 15 minutes my patience wore out. I simply turned the music off and announced over the microphone that it would not be coming back on again until some from her party came and convinced her to leave. That did the trick.
Despite all that, I really enjoyed tonight. I've been stressed about it for days but it went really well. A disco where I have to work to create the play list (as oppose to a run of the mill disco where I can pretty much write the playlist as soon as I see the crowd) but where it's appreciated by the crowd who dance all night is much more rewarding. At the end of the night tonight a number of people went out of their way to come up and thank me with several saying something along the lines of "the best disco I've been to in a long long time".
A 2-tone and Ska night next week. I know even less about that than I do about motown and have much less information available to fall back on. So I may bring in another DJ to assist me who knows a great deal more.
